As a reviewer, I consider myself to be a pretty lenient guy, but sometimes I have to come down pretty hard on some shows. Unfortunately, that statement spoils this review a bit. And before you ask me, yes, this does have something to do with the Devil May Cry remake that’s coming out soon. Devil May Cry is a great video game series that I greatly enjoyed, but this anime was very lackluster in comparison. Let’s begin with the story. First off, there really is no story…each episode is a mission for Dante, which he “solves” (more like resolves). Only in the last few episodes do you see something that is connected, but it isn’t much. For those of you unfamiliar with the video games, Dante is a half-demon, half-human, who owns “Devil May Cry”, which is basically an agency for him to accept jobs that deal with demons. If you’re looking for plot, then this series doesn’t provide. If you want to watch Dante be Dante, then you can give it a shot.

Story: 5/10

The characters in this show are pretty one-dimensional. The only one with a history that you know about (assuming you don’t play the games) is Patty, a girl that Dante takes in after the first episode. Perhaps the characters rely too much on their video game personas, but that really isn’t much of an excuse.

Characters: 6/10

Animation looks great, for sure (although, there’s quite a lot of blood). Fight scenes looked very nice and the characters looked good (not that they were very original to begin with). The music isn’t very comprehensive, but it makes the action scenes seem pretty good.

Animation: 8/10

Music: 7/10

I’m not sure if it’s just a thing with anime based on video games (exempting visual novels), but they don’t usually tend to turn out so well. Yet somehow, I always find myself watching them. I’m guessing it’s partly due to the fact that they can’t exactly end these sorts of series, because of the ever-looming possibility of a sequel game. If you’re bored or are a huge fan of the series, then maybe you could give this anime a shot (it’s only a half-season), but don’t expect anything mind-blowing.

Final Score: 6/10
