Hmm, it’s been a few days since I posted anything… I really do apologize for that, I’ve been busy with work and all that fun stuff. Plus on top of that, E3 and Computex 2012 were going on last week so I’ve been following that pretty closely for those days. I’m really looking forward to The Last of Us, Watch Dogs, Tomb Raider, and Beyond. Well here’s my long overdue music review. (Unintentional rhyme ftw)
Ginga e Kickoff
“Across my world” by knotlamp
Pretty average for an alt band. The pronunciation of the lyrics are what I look for at least. The small 3 part harmony was simple and a nice changeup from the main melody. 7/10 Instrumentals The offbeat drumming was a little shaky but I think that was a problem on the vocal part. There was nothing too exciting going on in the instrumental department but at least it was a good solid sound. 7/10 Visualization This really is no different from any of the other sports anime OP’s I’ve seen. 6/10 Overall Pretty consistent with all the other sports OP’s I have seen so far. 7/10
Haiyoru! Nyaruani: Remember My Love
“Koi suru Otome no Catharsis” (恋する乙女のカタルシス) by LISP
…umm. What is going on? This is weird. This is definitely not something you would want to listen to by itself (unless you’re into that kinda thing). There is way too much cutesy/moe in the vocals for my liking. 5/10 Instrumentals Hmm, nothing I like here either. It’s that generic digital instrumental track that would only fit this type of bitter sounding vocals. 5/10 Visuals At least it looks good lols. The character animations look pretty good. It’s certainly better than the music. 6/10 Overall It’s pretty entertaining but from a musical standpoint, I did not like it at all. 5/10
Hiiro no Kakera
“Nee” by Maiko Fujita
Her voice is has a nice dynamic that’s not very common. It does sound like she does have a little trouble making that 5th interval jump to that high note. Some of her high notes do get a little wispy but I do like how she doesn’t get shrill when she does sing at the top of her range. 8/10 Instrumentals The instrumentals really get out of the way and let the vocals completely take over. I really like how light everything is in this whole song. 8/10 Visualization Nice animation quality but damn, everyone looks so depressed. It looks like a typical male harem show. 7/10 Overall Aside from the obvious break in the vocals when Maiko Fujita jumps that 5th, it’s really nice. There is a lot of emotion in the way she shapes her phrases which takes a song to a whole new level. 8/10
Hyouka
“Yasashisa no Riyuu (優しさの理由)” by Chouchou
Very strong vocal performance. Everything is supported and the pronunciation is on freaking point. I really like how she adds a slight vibrato at the end of those held notes. There is really nothing that I do not like from the vocals. 10/10 Instrumentals The instrumentals are kept upbeat throughout the whole OP. The slight slowdown in tempo in the verses really adds a nice dynamic to the track. 9/10 Visualization I like how they use colors to portray the dullness that the main character associates with the world. Everything is shaded in gray but when something catches his attention, you get a drop of color. The animation quality is the best in the entire Spring 2012 season. 10/10 Overall This is the best OP of the entire season (so far). The way the animation was done and the amazing track that accompanies it set it far apart from anything else. If you like the TV size, then you will love the full version 10/10
Jewelpet Kira☆Deco—!
“Happy Lucky☆Go!” (ハッピーラッキー☆ゴー!) by Mana Ashida
First of all, the singer is only 7 years old! So I will judge accordingly. At first I thought that this Mana Ashida girl was trying to sound like a child but when I found out her age, I was very surprised. She was very in tune and did not sound bad at all, for someone who is 7.
7/10
Instrumentals
The instrumentals here are something that you will only find in children songs. It’s not something anyone over 10 would want to listen to.
6/10
Visualization
Well, this is a childrens anime and that is made very clear in everything in this OP.
6/10
Overall
I’m still amazed that the vocals are coming from a 7 year old. Well done Mana Ashida, well done.
6/10
