Hyouka Episode 20 Thoughts

Welcome to the Houtarou X Eru Power Hour!

Before the last episode, let’s wrap up this year (season) with 20, a Sappy New Year’s! First off, I want to point out that KyoAni truly is the definition of quality. Again. Alright, so the animation & presentation’s still as wonderful as it always has been, but the art this episode stands out in particular because Eru’s kimono just screams of moe & “My waifu!” – or something like that. I mean it, that’s the most defined kimono I’ve ever seen in anime! And THAT NAPE; her beautiful, bare nape… Sakaki would be proud. ^_^

THEN GET ON WITH IT, ALREADY! So that they’re right!

Establishing character: Eru Chitanda. The kimono wasn’t just there for looks. The way I see it, it also screams of how innocent, sincere and gorgeous Eru’s character really is. What’s more, she wanted to show it off to Houtarou of all people – yeah, their bond has grown, but even when she’s aggressive or being imperfectly perfect, she’s still the Eru we all know and are sometimes annoyed by. But we love her anyways. That hasn’t changed, and this show wouldn’t be half as fun without her. And don’t even get me started on that nape…

Houtarou Oreki – MAN OF ACTION.

Establishing character: Houtarou Oreki. You lucky, ingenious bastard. Misfortune? Bah, don’t be ridiculous. Who needs superhuman/supernatural powers & abilities, a harem of 4-3000 beautiful girls, or gifted ninja/alien/reaper abilities like flash stepping across the galaxy… when you have a powerful, constructive, efficient mind that can deduce, induce and theorize any scenario? And still have enough energy to be a hermit crab? My siblings also agree. If there was anyone I’d inspire to be, this guy would be my 1st choice. We love you, Houtarou!

From a critical standpoint, it would’ve been better off if this episode was a more casual slice-of-life that didn’t try to solve anything. The locked-in-the-shed predicament could’ve resolved their unsolved intimacy towards each other instead, and I’m not the only one who wanted that, trust me. Plus, everyone knows cuddling together reserves body heat – it’s common sense! It could just be KyoAni trolling with us. Like Kaho’s silliness, Mayaka in a Miko outfit (in a ponytail, too <3), and Satoshi being the hero for once!
